Freelance copywriting carbon footprint

| November 25, 2009

footprintMore and more businesses and consumers are making buying decisions based on supplier’s carbon emissions.

So how much carbon do I emit as a freelance copywriter working from home?

I’ve calculated my carbon output using the UK government’s calculator at http://carboncalculator.direct.gov.uk. Here are the results:

  • as an individual I emit 2.24 tonnes of carbon per year
  • the national UK average is 4.46 tonnes a year
  • my target is 1.79 tonnes per year

The site provides a personal plan to help me reduce my carbon footprint by at least 0.45 tonnes and hit my target.

I also plan to invest in five carbon credits, worth 5 tonnes of carbon. This’ll let me mitigate the damage I cause even further by supporting green energy initiatives.

Originally from North Yorkshire, I live in Brighton on the sunny south coast. I've had a passion for words all my life and this is my eighth year as a freelance writer. In my spare time I draw, paint, sculpt, design, garden, read, write poetry and enjoy long distance hiking. I'm also a volunteer shepherd - a Lookerer - for Brighton & Hove City Council.
