New business? Choose your url wisely

Your url – what’s in a name?

If I’d known back then what I know now, I’d have called my freelance copywriting website or instead of helpinthecity.

When your url includes a high-performing key word or key phrase, your website is automatically more visible to people who search using that phrase. Much more so than if you’d gone to town on a clever, witty or weird name.

The down side? There’s not much room left for creativity. And the best urls get snapped up pretty quickly by SEO-aware start ups.

PS. In 2015 the power of a relevant url has waned. Just having one is no longer enough to boost your search results positions.

Originally from Middlesbrough, I lived in Brighton for many years before moving to North Devon. I’ve had a passion for words all my life and this is my twelfth year as a freelance writer. In my spare time I draw, paint, sculpt, carve wood and rock, garden, read, write poetry and enjoy long distance hiking. I sing and play the recorder. I collect modernist paintings, vintage rugs and mid-century German art pottery. I’m a member of The Poetry Society. And I am an experienced volunteer shepherd, a ‘Lookerer’.
